Reading some of the recent publications of Robin Harbage, I have reached the conclusion that I should try to avoid the use of the term “Pay As You Drive” in a generic way. It is a registered trademark in several countries that, therefore, you cannot use freely if you don´t refer to a concrete project of a concrete insurance company.
In its place I will use the term “Usage Based Insurance”, which is usually used in North America.
Robin Harbage is possibly one of the persons that more experience accumulates in projects UBI, since he has actively and directly worked in the projects Autograph, Tripsense and MyRate of Progressive, “Pay as you drive” of Norwich Union and Autograph of Aviva Canada.
Now, Robin works in the consultancy company EMB and I am sure that he will be able to mobilize the insurance companies to print a new dynamics to this application. The insurance companies are aware of the repercussions that can have the applications UBI on the emissions of CO2 and their social responsibility has led them to commit in its development.
They consider that you could get a quick and comfortable adaptation of the system, if somehow, you standardizes, normalizes and you imposes the system like obligatory. They elaborated a proposal in this sense but it was rejected by the insurance regulators.
It seems obvious that, in the democratic countries, it won’t be easy to have a resolved support to a project, whose respect to the privacy is still in judgment.
We should keep in mind that, for example in Europe, in the last 500 years the persecution of populations for ethnic, religious or political reasons on the part of legally constituted states have been, unfortunately, a constant and that it is comprehensible the existence of this distrust.
Any way, with the measures that the projects are taking at the moment I don’t believe that is presented any problem while the market quota is being located below 10-15%. Above this threshold a project that transmits the position of the vehicle systematically is possible that can meet with problems because you could consider that you are imposing in the market and that the client no longer has the option of rejecting it without additional cost.
