Dear Salvador,

I would like to direct your attention to a new commercial usage based insurance product that is available in the US. It is called Onboard Advisor and it is provided by Liberty Mutual insurance. It is also explained by Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pay_As_You_Drive.

Dear Mr Engel.

The patent was not sold in the auction.

The interested companies had too many doubts because of:

The spanish patent ES 2108613 is very different to the european one.

The european patent EP 0700009 is only applied in Italy, France, Germany and England.

The english patent is propiety of Norwich Union.

And finally, Norwich Union has non exclusive licenses of the spanish, german and french patents.

I think that you know, even better than me, that nowadays noone has doubts about that the project "Pay as you drive" is able, the discussion is centered in if in a 5 year term it will have a quota of market of the 10 or of 50%.

There is a big uncertantly in what will be the technological solutions and which enterprises are going to definetely stay in the market. This uncertainty scares the insurance companies and makes them retract in such a way the promoters of the project are still the technological enterprises, that react creating more proposals and more uncertance.

This will explote...

In respect to the sell of the patent nowadays, there are negotiations with some enterprises, althought with complicated conditions. I imagine that this is also something that will be solutioned as we see how the market is going to evolve. I don't believe that the current situation will be prolonged more than some months.

Dear Mr.Minguijon.

I wonder how the auction of your patent for PAYD went last time ?
Did you succeed in selling it ?

Best regards,

Henri Engel.

[...] Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, David McClure Director of telematics in Research and Markets exposed in its last report on the branch tendencies: “We have witnessed a dramatic change in the telematics industry in recent years, with the initial dominance of vehicle manufacturers being replaced by the business needs and policy objectives of the insurance industry and European governments. “But in order for them to realise their goals, we need to see a step-change from the current situation, where each telematics service requires different in-car hardware, to a point where all applications can be supported on a single platform. This will require major investment and at present, none of the principle stakeholders appears willing to make the commitment alone, each preferring to ‘piggyback’ their services off a system installed at someone else’s expense. “Our report clearly illustrates the benefits that can be achieved once the present impasse is resolved.” Refering to the project “Pay as you drive” I fully coincide with the diagnosis of David Mcclure, it is a reality that I usually have to face with in the negotiations for the exploitation of the patent EP 0700009.
It is necessary to remember that the only project in real commercial phase is the "Pay as you drive" of Norwich Union and that Norwich already acquired the property of the patent in England, together with some other rights in other countries.

What happened is that nobody made the first bid, although they would possibly have bid to avoid that their competition acquires the patent.
